Impact of Psychological Needs of the Workers on Determining Type and Strength of Motivation

Abstract

This research on job motivation of employees is to know the degrees to which basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are supporting to determine both the type and strength of motivation. Motivation act as a driving force for an employee to effectively perform the job. Structured Questionnaire was designed based on Self-determination theory (SDT) comprising factors related to life goals aspirations of employees and various intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing motivation.Data were collected from 439 employees working in spinning mills. Responses were collected by interacting with the employees working at spinning mills. Data collected through questionnaire are analysed using tools such as weighted average, chi square, regression and correlation.From the analysis it is found that the employees are highly motivated in their job. The three basic psychological needs: Autonomy, Competence, Relatedness are satisfied and their contribution to overall motivation is high. The life aspirations of employees hold a value of importance in determination of level of motivation in their job. Thereby the level of motivation is determined.
