Abstract

The search for renewable and sustainable alternative energy sources is gaining more importance in the field of energy throughout the worldwide. Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) technology is an alternative and sustainable energy generation system contributing to minimizing the over dependency of fossil fuel energy. The MFC is a bio-electrical system in which bacteria is used as a catalyst to degrade organic material and generate electricity. The article attempts to present the MFC system in terms of materials, thermodynamic aspects, working designs, case studies with the application and historical development of MFC.
