Research on the Technical Characteristics and Aesthetic Implication of Huizhou Bamboo Carving

Abstract

Huizhou bamboo carving is an important part of the extensive and profound culture of Hui. Alongside wood carving, stone carving and brick carving, it is one of the famous "Huizhou four carvings". However, to date scholars of Chinese traditional techniques have tended to pay more attention to the other three carving styles, at the expense of bamboo carving. To a certain extent, there remains a gap in the knowledge about the history and practice of Huizhou bamboo carving. This paper proposes to examine the art form more thoroughly, looking especially at the special materials, types, themes, expressions and technical features of Huizhou bamboo carving, examining its core skills and technologies, depicting the local aesthetic implications and the philosophy that underpins bamboo carving culture. Recommendations will also be made about preserving the traditions and strengthening the development and utilization of Huizhou bamboo carving traditional techniques, which is central to the preservation of Huizhou folk arts, culture and identity.
