Abstract

This paper reviews the historical background, former methods, moderntrends, upcomingchallenges and opportunities of optimal meter placement in Transmission and distribution system. In the present world of automation, numerous industries adopta lot of electronic equipment like converters; microcontroller, microprocessor and semiconductor devices, etc.,and thesedevices are very susceptible topower quality disturbances. Hence it is very essential to monitor the power quality in actual-time and analyze the measured particulars to classify the power quality disturbances, to find the origin of power quality disturbance and to take the control actions. But in a distribution system there are hundreds of buses and variety of loads connected to it all through the distribution network, it is economically not possible to connect a monitoring device at every bus and another difficulty is the measured data will be huge to evaluate it in a real-time basis. This opened the door to many researchers to carry out the research on optimal meter placement in distribution network minimizing the measured data to be analyzed and is cost-effective. With least possible number of optimally located meters in distribution system entire system is monitored. In this paper various methods on optimal meter placement works advantages and their drawbacks and future challenges and opportunities are discussed.
