Pomegranate Production and Yield Estimate in Karnataka

Abstract

Pomegranate (Punica Granatum) is grown in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is an important fruit crop of arid and semi-arid regions of India. Along with its ability to withstand harsh climate and tolerate heat, drought, and situations like facing deficiency in moisture in soil, yet it contains the high nutritional value and one of the richest sources of antioxidant.

India is the leading country in pomegranate production with an increase in its production and its export showing a hike of approx. 3.5 times. In India, the pomegranate is commercially grown in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujrat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan.

Iran, India, China, Turkey, and USA are major producing countries in the world with 76% of the total production. India exports pomegranate mainly to Behrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Netherlands etc. The pomegranate variant specially is in demand internationally are Ganesh and Arakata.
