Abstract

In some control applications, it is desired to reach a precise or more accurate performance through employing some powerful techniques. A sliding mode controller (SMC) is one kind of robust control technique that can be used for this purpose. This paper is a comparative study of employing 1st and 2nd order SMC in controlling the speed of three-phase squirrel cage induction motor (3-ф SCIM) through using the variable voltage variable frequency (VVVF) method. The aim is to look for which SMC technique gives better performance to control the speed of the motor. The system is tested at different operating conditions and simulated in MATLAB Simulink R2017a.
