Abstract

The coverage issue in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can be usually defined as the measure of ‘how effectively a network field is monitored by its sensor nodes’. This issue has attracted a lot of interest for the past few years and consequently, a lot of coverage protocols have been introduced in the literature. However, extended lifetime of network remains a great concern that has to be resolved. This survey intends to make a review on 25 papers concerning area coverage maximization in WSNs. Accordingly, a systematic analysis on the adopted techniques are carried out and presented briefly. In addition, the analysis on performance measures and related maximum achievements are also reviewed from each contribution. Finally, the survey portrays numerous research problems and weaknesses that may be supportive for researchers to introduce latest techniques on the area coverage maximization in WSNs.
