Arab reviewers of O’Neill’s Theatre: Its style and Spread

Abstract

Eugene O'Neill is one of the most controversial figures in modern drama. Arab and European Scholars and critics have criticized his life experience and mental conflicts that shaped his art, his reputation as a dramatist that can be traced to the divisions in his mind. His theater is distinguished by its diversity and it spreads everywhere. The page focuses on some of the Arab reviewers’ opinions of O’Neill and his writing and it point out four of them; Brahim Alariss, Sameer Mohammed Ismaiel, Riyadh Assmat, and Dr.Yessin Attiya.The First Section of this study draws the critic of Brahim Alariss who speaks about O’Neill’s success, his realistic style, his styles and techniques from symbolic to naturalism to expressionism to the theater of masks and some issues about his life. In section two Sameer Mohammed Ismaiel writes his article about Hisham Kaferneh who recovered “Desire Under the Elms” to present it in a new sitting with the Damascus National Theater Company. The show come under “House of Passion” in the Syrian version. Dr.Yessin Attiya explains the role of the characters, monologues and stage directions and he writes about the use of masks and the relationships of the characters in the third section. Section four analyzes the article entitled “O’Neill Noble Prize in the Theater Excursion and the Search for Gold “جائز أوجين أونيل في رحلة المسرح و البحث عن الذهب”, written in Meo Midst Online presents O’Neill’s talent, genius and his life experience. The last section is an article of Riyadh Assmat who writes about the American theater celebrating the revival of the work of Eugene O’Neill(1888-1953).
