A Comparative Study of the Bearing Capacity of Rapid Population Growth and Urbanization Srinagar Nishat Shalimar Area with Analytical Methods and A Plate Load Test
Abstract
This comparative study was made to evaluate the comparison of bearing capacity of the boulevard area on the basis of Analytical methods and Plate load tests situated along the Dal Lake. This area being located on the bank of the Dal Lake, the water table is available nearly at the ground surface making it almost water logged. Two sites of this area were selected for this investigation. The laboratory tests were limited to Gradation, Atterberg limits, specific gravity, in-situ direct shear test, unconfined compression test, in-situ moisture content determination. Results indicate that the foundation soil at two sites is silt of medium compressibility (MI), having plasticity index of two sites 12 and 9, specific gravity of two sites 2.69 and 2.4,angle of internal friction of two sites are18⁰ and 20⁰,cohesion of two sites are 6.646kN/m2 and 4.45kN/m2,in-situ moisture content are 52.93 and 51.57.Simplified Terzaghi, Meyerhof”s, and IS code equations were employed for determination of bearing capacity. Also, the field test i.e., Plate Load test was conducted at two different sites. The investigation showed that there is huge difference in bearing capacity obtained from Analytical methods and Plate Load tests
