Education for Democratic Citizenship: Exploring the Approaches for School Learners

Abstract

Education for democratic citizenship plays a pivotal role in the development of any democratic society. Education and Democracy are closely interrelated. Education for democratic citizenship (EDC) is central to educational reform which aims to prepare active and informed citizens who participate in the developmental processes of a democratic country. The central notion behind education for democratic citizenship aims to create a suitable learning environment for its empowered critical citizens who areresponsible for his/her actions in a democratic society. This essay conceptualizes the concept and related developments of EDC and highlights an overview with detailed examination of approaches associated with the concept from a school education perspective in India.
