Hybrid Fiber Effects on Strength Characteristics of Sustainable Concrete

The demand for the concrete as a construction material has been increasing rapidly since last few decades. The modified mix method of design in recent years by various researches has been fulfilling the purpose of high strength, high durability, and complex members design. The reinforcement of concrete by short fibres prevents early shrinkage cracks, provides high strength resistance against various forces of compression, tensile, flexure etc. In this experiment short hybrid fibres were reinforced of two typesi.e steel & HDPE. The steel fibres are short length carbon steel fibres casted in form of thin wires, cut in short length and HDPE fibres were procured by recycling waste automobile oil cannisters collected locally as a waste from automobile garages. The HDPE type is also a plastic variant, a nuisance to atmosphere. The fly ash was also used as a replacement to cement in varying percentages.

In this experimental research, the fibres both steel and HDPE were kept constant at 0.5% each in design mix, while the fly ash replacement with cement was varied at 20,40&60%. The concrete mix prepared was subjected to a study of compressive, tensile, and flexure failure, casted, cured & tested at 3,7,28days comparing the results with conventional design mix of concrete. The test results did show increase in strength of 4.9% in compression, 6.83% in tensile and 4.48% in flexure for optimum mix design M2 with 0.5% each steel & HDPE fibre and 40% fly ash replacement of cement. The concrete mix was also subjected to durability test of sulphuric acid attack for a period of 30days and showed the 0.446 percent loss in weight.
