Construction of "Ecological Design Education System for College Product Design Major" and Its Practice in SCFAI

Abstract

As is known to all, design constitutes the front end of production and construction activities. Designquality directly determinesproduct quality in production, marketing, use, recycling, and reuse. Ecological design means a design concept that maximizes product functionality, minimizes negative environmental impacts and resource consumption, which also represents a development trend of design.Industrial design major of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute (SCFAI) took the lead to set up "ecological Product Design (Eco Design)" course among China's design colleges since 2002. Up to now, after 17 years of teaching practice, great improvement has been achieved in students' ecological design and innovative thinking and the teaching system has been continuously improved in the teaching practice of the course. In the continuous teaching practice, the teaching team has gradually developed a “ecologicaldesign education system for product design major”. It has taken nine years (2009-2018) to complete the system. Its purpose is to meet the rigid demand for ecological design talents in China's ecological development strategy, cultivate product designers with sustainable development concept and comprehensive view of environmental resources who master ecological design methods for social development. Taking sustainable development as the core educational concept, the system incorporatesscientific ecological environment value, behavioral concepts and means to the whole teaching process of basic concepts, basic theories, design methods and design practices of product design. The “ecological  design education system for product design major” in Sichuan Fine Arts Institute (SCFAI) is thereby established, which takes the six subsystems of "teaching content system", "cultivation method system","teaching process system", "practice platform system","shared communication system" and "comprehensive evaluation system" as the core.
