Application of Written Pole Technology® in Development of Variable Speed Constant Frequency Generator Using Variable Pole Width Approach

Abstract

A new technology in which the poles of a given synchronous generator are varied ‘on-line’. The poles in the machine will change according to speed to keep output frequency in tune with grid frequency. The machine can have even odd number of poles or even fraction of poles for a mechanical rotation of 360o! The width of poles will increase as the speed increase and vise versa as the speed decreases. The ALNICO ring provided on the rotor will act as the poles. The exciter coil with necessary MMF will create the required ampere turns to magnetize or de-magnetize the ALNICO ring. The EMF generated will be having the same frequency as the supply frequency.
