Ranking of road networks based on their safety level in Gorakhpur district, U.P. (India)

Abstract

The rapid growth and increasing economic activities have resulted in the tremendous growth of motor vehicles. This is one of the primary factors responsible for road accidents in places, including Gorakhpur. To mitigate the problem of road traffic accidents, it is very important to check the safety levels of each road. In the present study, road safety assessment is done on road networks in Gorakhpur district, U.P. (India). For this study, a proforma was developed which was based on various road parameters responsible for road traffic accidents. Total 27 roads were examined on-field and weighted according to their safety level with help of field experts. Roads are then ranked according to their total score. This study may help policymakers to know about the worst condition roads and to take appropriate action to upgrade them.
