Abstract

Purpose- This paper examines the impact of COVID-19 on the lives of the students pursuing postgraduation (MBA 2020-22) in India. The main objective set to be achieved from this study is to find out the factors that have an impact on the MBA students of India during the pandemic on various parameters ranging from mental to emotional spheres.

Design/methodology/approach- A mixed method of research is the basis of this study. It comprises of quantitative research done via Exploratory Factor Analysis and qualitative research using Thematic Analysis. A total of 110 students pursuing MBA had submitted their responses to a questionnaire. A total of 10 students were selected and interviewed to elicit the insights on the study with semi-structured interviews conducted to further refine the study. Purposive sampling was used to select participants.

Findings- Based on quantitative analysis done via Exploratory Factor Analysis, various factors affecting MBA students during the pandemic have been found and narrowed down to psychological impact, fallacy in studies, student perception of virtual classes and bodily changes. Thematic Analysis further classifies factors affecting students.

Research implications- More similar studies in different streams other than MBA are encouraged to work around the current findings so that Universities can align their course delivery virtually while being cognizant about the factors affecting students due to the pandemic and offer sufficient guidance to them.

Social implications- COVID-19 has caused Government to impose lockdowns and social distancing leading to virtual classes which has impacted the landscape of social lives as we know. This study addresses the emotional quotient and anxiety related issues via video interviews of MBA students to better understand the current situation.

Originality/ Value- This research has findings that contribute to the body of knowledge in enriching students’ experience during a pandemic. As one of the preliminary studies in addressing this area, it brings new arena for academic researchers.
