Abstract

Film-wise condensation of refrigerant R134a & R1234yf outside smooth & standard finned tubes was experimentally investigated. Fins per inch (FPI) of 25 & fin heights of 1 & 1.4 mm characterize the finned tubes. The condensation process was studied at condensing pressures of 8 & 8.5 bar with water inlet temps ranging from 19 to 20°C. The results showed that the Nusselt theory accurately predicted the condensation HTCs on smooth tubes within MAPD 0.18% for R134a & 1.9% for R1234yf. As the heat flux increases, the condensation HTC decreases. The increase in LMTD leads to an increase in overall HTCs. When comparing smooth tube to standard finned tube with 1.4 mm fin & R1234yf, the standard finned tube with 1.4 mm fin height & R1234yf gained a 10 times enhancement factor & 9 times with refrigerant R134a. When comparison to experimental values for standard finned tubes, the MAPD of predicted HTC results for Briggs & Rose model [1] & Murata & Hashizume model [2] is 65 % for Briggs & Rose model [1] & 20% for Murata & Hashizume model [2].
