Abstract

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effects of career exploration behavior on the career choice commitment and self-determination of university athletes.

Methods/Statistical analysis: The research subjects were 377 university athletes. Through the questionnaire, the data of career exploration, career choice commitment, and self-determination was obtained. For data processing, the frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted.

Findings: First, the career exploration behavior, career choice commitment, and self-determination of university athletes showed positive correlations. Second, the career exploration behavior had statistically-significantly positive effects on the career choice commitment. Third, the career exploration behavior had statistically-significantly positive effects on the self-determination.

Improvements/Applications: Such results of this study proved the rightfulness to perform the career exploration behavior before deciding career. Eventually, as the period to choose an occupation for lifetime after graduation, the career exploration must be very important to university athletes. In case of university athletes, there are many difficulties to choose a job as they have to decide their own career such as professional athlete or coach. Also, the range of occupation choice for university athletes is narrower than the one for middle/high school athletes, so this study implies that the self-determination should be sufficiently considered for the choice of occupation.
