Abstract

Articulated tower comes under the category of compliant offshore structure and is defined as the linear or an upright structure fixed at the base by a universal hinge. The tower is balanced by providing a ballast chamber near the universal joint at its base and held vertically by the buoyant force acting on it.  In this paper, dynamic analysis of the duple pivot articulated tower under regular waves for two articulated tower models in diverse aqua extent of unequal magnitude has been carried out under linear and nonlinear wave approaches with current force. The nonlinear governing equations of motion are derived using Lagrangian approach. Nonlinear impacts because of variable submergence, buoyancy, added mass, immediate position of the tower and relative-velocity squared drag force are considered in the analysis. The equation of motion has been solved in time domain using Houbolt integration scheme. The wave forces have been evaluated by Airy’s linear wave theory and Stokes’ Vth order nonlinear wave theory and hydrodynamic forces has been evaluated as per modified Morison’s equation with Chakrabarti’s modifications. Thearticulated tower model I and II in 350 m and 450 m water depth respectively has been selected for the analogous research. Both the articulated tower’s analogous responses has been meticulously studied under a sea state (Hs =10 m and Tz = 10 Sec) with current 1m/s. The investigation highlights lot of essential results which might be valuable to the configuration of offshore articulated tower structure.
