Abstract

The main aim of research is to study the impact of Bakelite on various properties of bitumen binder. It has a three dimensional structure and is polymer amorphous in nature. It provides strength, hardness and rigidity. This paper gives overview on the use Bakelite in roads. Previous studies show that Bakelite can improve some properties of modified bitumen mix. Bakelite mixed in bitumen in different percentages from 1% to 2% with an increment of .25%.From environment and economic point of view, use of Bakelite as an additive to bitumen mix give good result. The mixing of Bakelite with bitumen mix also increases the life of pavement. The use of Bakelite material in roads construction can increase the age of pavements for longer time.

Today disposal of different wastes produced from different Industries is a great problem. These materials pose environmental pollution in the nearby locality because many of them are non-biodegradable; Crumb rubber is one of them. Soil, stone aggregate, sand, bitumen, cement etc. are used for road construction. Natural materials are limited in nature, its quantity is decreasing and cost is increasing. Concerned about this, engineers are looking for alternative materials for highway construction, by which the quality of road is increase with low cost. Keeping in mind the need for bulk use of these solid wastes in India, it was thought expedient to test these materials and to develop specifications to enhance the use of waste tyres in road making in which higher economic returns may be possible. The waste tyres can be used in the form of aggregate which on mixing with various bitumen in suitable size.

In this work, Bakelite and Crumb rubber is used as a part of bitumen and a modifier/reinforcer to enhance the performance of asphalt/ bituminous concrete mix. The main purpose of this work is to study the impact of Bakelite and Crumb rubber on the various properties of a bituminous concrete mix and to compare the results with the conventional bituminous mix. Bakelite contains a large number of polar compounds and resins, so it is easily compatible with bitumen and also helps in enhancing its performance. An experimental study is led to find the effect of Bakelite and Crumb rubber on the various properties of the mix such as bulk specific gravity of mix (Gm), air voids (VA), voids in mineral aggregates (VMA), voids filled by bitumen (VFB), Marshall stability value and flow value and compare them with the conventional properties of the mix by conducting volumetric analysis and Marshall stability test.
