Abstract

In present study attempt to enhance the melting rate of the Phase change material (PCM) at a vertical double pipe latent heat thermal energy storage unit (LHSU) had performed. The enhancement was performed by modifying the inner pipe of the LHSU to a conical shape pipe having large diameter at the bottom and small diameter at the top aiming to increase the heat transfer surface at the lower region of the LHSU. The thermal performance of the proposed conical LHSU was compared to the normal vertical double pipe LHSU. The result show that the melting rate was enhanced by 27% for the conical LHSU compared to the normal LHSU. Also the charging power of the conical LHSU was accelerated significantly.
