Abstract

This paper presents a detailed experimental investigation into the acid resistance of blended concrete immersed upto32 weeks in Sulfuric acid (H2SO4), Nitric acid (HN03) and Hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions. GGBS was used to replace the cement (at different percentages) to develop the binary blended concrete.  Two cements were considered (OPC53, OPC53S) and blended with GGBS at different replacement levels.  The variable factors considered in this study were ‘different replacement levels of GGBS’ and ‘curing periods’ (28 days and 90 days) of the concrete specimens. The parameters studied were 1)the time in days required to cause 10% mass loss and 2)a deterioration factor of 5% H2SO4, 5% HNO3, and 5% HCl solutions on a fully immersed concrete specimen. From the investigation, it is found that the binary blended concrete prepared with OPC53S and 40% GGBS performed better (in acid resistance) than the ordinary plain concrete and binary blended concrete prepared with OPC53.
