Abstract

This article presents a comprehensive review on a novel antenna design approach with the help of characteristics mode analysis (CMA). The ultimate aim of this article is to emphasize the progress in antenna development for the parameters such as linearly polarized impedance bandwidth (IBW) using CMA. The literature begins with the physical insights of standard modal parameters on radiating structures. Next, it addresses a systematic design procedure of CMA for a typical antenna structure. Then, the present state of research investigation related to CMA in the antenna engineering applications, especially for bandwidth (BW) is highlighted. It can be evident that how CMA can be advantageous to achieve BW enhancement before the design of any feeding structure. Further, it also clearly reveals to the readers, how a certain feeding can be designed for obtaining specific mode(s) of excitation in the antenna domain. Finally, the article ends with some concluding remarks.
