Abstract

The penetration of smart connected tech into users’ homes is increasing rapidly day by day due to the wider acceptance of IoT. When it comes to the consumer market, IoT is most widely recognised as a set of products related to the concept of a “smart home” to help simplify and add convenience to people’s everyday routine. Hence, the concept of a smart mirror was born. This paper documents the design and development of such a product. A mirror provides a clean and simple mean of interaction with a graphical display to control “smart-home” devices and access personalized services. The ease of access of such information is also prioritized, in providing a clean display of all this data with minimal user interaction. On the privacy front, a facial-recognition based authentication process is provided to automatically detect the user and load in the relevant, personalized modules. A system of module-based integration is provided to develop and deploy various services as per the user’s needs. The integration of Alexa opens up the mirror to the vast offerings offered by the service and the expandability of the connected-home experience offered by it.
