Abstract

Cloud applications have confronted incredible revolution due to the innovations of Software-defined networking (SDN)practices which has also augmented the quantity of cyber security threats. Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) is a harmful cyber-attack that significantly degrades the system performance in most organizations. Prominent studies have identified the machine learning models have emerged as the effective solutions for detecting the attacks by accurately classifying the traffic data in the SDN based cloud. Based on these interpretations, this paper aims at presenting an effective machine learning classifier model that balances both accuracy and complexity. An advanced Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier has been introduced by optimally regulating the SVM configuration through a novel Hyper-heuristic Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (HHBOA). Initially, an efficient filtering technique called Source-based IP filtering (SIPF) is introduced to reducethe storage costs and increase the intrusion detection through most significant features. Then the proposed HHBOA-SVM model is used to categorize the traffic data to identify DDoS attacks through an effective learning process. Finally, the defence mechanism is introduced through the combined model of SIPF and HHBOA-SVM to avert the DDoS attacks in SDN-based cloud applications. An SDN-based cloud model is developed in the MATLAB tool to emulate the implementation set-up. The tests conducted using the CICDDoS2019 assessment dataset illustrate that the suggestedHHBOA-SVM and SIPF were highly accurate in detecting various DDoS attack types and also effective in defending the system.
