Abstract

Plant kingdoms are good sources of natural products, with many of them being used for medicinal purposes. Phytochemical are plant compounds that have disease-preventive or defensive properties. Phytochemical help the human body in a various ways. The present study was undertaken to assess the antimicrobial activity of Ceiba pentandra blended woven fabric finished with Cissus quadrangularis (C. quadrangularis) and Syzygium cumini (S. cumini) extracts. Extraction of phytochemical from the extract was carried out by ethanol. Bioassay results reveal that crude ethanol extract of both plant sources exhibited good antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli Further, Ceiba pentandra blended with cotton fabric in the ratio of 70:30 were finished with C. quadrangularis and S. cumini extracts using pad-dry-cure method. The finished fabric was subjected to qualitative and quantitive antimicrobial assay using (AATCC 100 2019 and AATCC 30 part 3) standards. The results concluded that Ceiba pentandra fabrics finished with C. quadrangularis extract showed 99% bacterial reduction against Staphylococcus aureus and   Klebsiella pneumoniae and for antifungal activities Ceiba pentandra fabric finished with C. quadrangularis and S. cumini extracts shows there is non-inhibition zone, growth under sample slightly reduced against Apergillus niger. This study explored Ceiba pentandra fabrics finished with C. quadrangularis and S. cumini extracts are a great value added textile product.
