Quantitative Analysis to Prove the Significance of Textiles among Interior Design Elements

Abstract

Interior designers use textiles as an important tool to create a mood and set the tone for a space based on a client's needs and the space's intended purpose. They make choices about what types of textures, colors, and patterns to use to create the desired effect. Some textile designers specialize in creating textiles for interior design purposes. These professionals have to be very knowledgeable about the various types of textiles. The research proves that textiles must be recognized as a major element and contributing factor to the interior palette. This is achieved by quantifying the area covered by textiles (upholstery, cushions, curtains, floor and wall covers) with respect to other interior design components (furniture, accessories, and lighting) in different interior spaces as part of an experiment in the textiles course which is offered as a major course in the interior design program. The students were asked to produce and prepare a presentation on selected topics which reflect the textile language such as “The importance of textile & Textile categories”, “Criteria for fabric selection”, “Fabric types”, and “Fabricating Textiles”. The goal is for the students to be able select appropriate care processes for textile products, Identify codes and regulations that govern the textile industry and explore various textile related careers.
