Grounded Theory-Based Theoretical Construction of Participation Motivation of Mountain Outdoor Sportsmen

Abstract

Objectives: As people pursue a better life in China, there are more and more participants in mountain outdoor sports, but the current academic research on the participation motivation is still imperfect, especially in construction of dimensions.

Methods: This study conduct semi-structured interviews with mountain outdoor sportsmen based on data collection requirements of grounded theory to collect data, Adopting grounded theory research method, this study qualitatively analyzes 33 copies of interview materials to investigate dimensions in mountain outdoor sportsmen’s participation motivation.

Results: The conceptual structure dimension model for mountain outdoor sportsmen’s participation motivation is formed by five main categories, namely interest, socializing, health, knowledge seeking, and achievement.

Conclusions: (1) Participation motivation of outdoor sportsmen consists of five dimensions; (2) achievement, interest and knowledge seeking are the internal motivation of mountain outdoor sportsmen’s participation in mountain outdoor sports; (3) socializing and health are the external motivation of mountain outdoor sportsmen.
