Evaluation of the Current Iraqi Construction Industry Project Performance (Time and Cost)

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the current construction performance, leading to project duration and cost variation in the Iraqi construction industry. The method of investigation was carried through a quantitative approach, using questionnaire form that was distrusted among practitioners in the construction industry in Iraq. The questionnaire was submitted through google form, and the data gathered was analyzed using Smart-PLS software version 3. A total of 382 respondents were gathered for this study, that includes Engineers, Architects, and other related construction personnel in Iraqi construction industry. The respondents of the construction industry professionals have shown a satisfactory awareness on the new application such as Primavera, AutoCAD 3-D, and other related software’s in the construction industry that benefits the construction performance, the defects of time and cost in the project performance criteria always tends to occur in complex project involvement. construction professional in Iraq are Throughout the analysis of the gathered data it was determined the Iraqi construction and Lack of communication/ poor control, by different parties, consultant, main contractor and subcontractor are key reasons for longer duration of projects. Unidentified rules and regulations of construction industry by international companies involved in construction are another reason for higher cost and project costing overruns. The majority of the problems leading to longer project duration and higher project cost and overrun in the Iraqi construction industry in general are induced and posed by owners and contractors demanding changes on project scope and design, which hence leads to poor project performance. The results determined further implement the utilization and further research, on the era of construction industry approaches and technologies for the enhancement of the construction industry in Iraq.
