Adolescent Mental Health in Relation to Home Environment

Abstract

The present study was carried out to investigate the relation between home environment and mental health of male adolescents with respect to working and non-working mothers. The sample consisted of 100 male adolescents of Guwahati city out of which 50 were having working mothers and another 50 having non-working mothers. The sample was collected by adopting the method of purposive random sampling. The tools used were: Home Environment Inventory (HEI) devised by Karuna Shankar Misra (1983) and Mental Health Inventory developed and validated by Jagdish and A.K. Srivasta. Mean, SD,‘t’ and Pearson’s Product moment coefficient of correlation ‘r’ was carried out for the purpose of data analysis. The results reveal that there is a significant positive relationship between home environment and mental health. Additional findings states that male adolescents with working mothers had a significantly higher mental health score as compared to that of male adolescents with non-working mothers.
