Research on the Vernacular Spatial Language of Rural Settlements

Abstract

Chinese villages are diverse, not only embodying different cultures and history, but also containing architectural wisdom. Different vernacular architectural cultures have been developed under the culture of different regions. The research selects Jiangnan area of China as the research object, to study the vernacular spatial language by the analysis of historical atlas, pictures and current situation. The research mainly draws on the methodology of structuralism linguistics and focuses on the structure of spatial language, to explore the deep structure of vernacular space. The study carries out analysis on 3 the urban-rural continuum structure, and settlement spatial structural language, mainly refers to the theories and ideas of urban-rural continuum theory, architectural typology, synchronic linguistics, etc., using the methods of historical images analysis, satellite maps analysis, and field surveys to interpret the vernacular space. Through historical spatial research on different scales, the study tries to reveal the self-organization regularity of the Jiangnan water settlements space on various scales, and abstracted a series of pattern diagrams, which may provide a reference for the current rural planning and construction.
